What Does Welder Qualification
Management Software Do?

It keeps every welder's qualification valid, current and provable — automatically — so an out-of-date certificate never reaches a job or an auditor by surprise.

The Short Answer

Welder qualification management software stores each welder's performance qualifications, tracks whether they are still valid under the governing code, and warns you before one lapses — turning a compliance task that shops usually run on spreadsheets into a live, audit-ready record. A welder being qualified once is not enough: codes require that qualification to be kept current, and proving it is exactly the kind of paperwork that quietly rots in a folder until an audit exposes the gap. Software closes that gap by watching the clock for every welder at once.

What a Welder Qualification Actually Is

A welder qualification — a WPQ (Welder Performance Qualification), sometimes called a welder certificate — is the evidence that a specific person can deposit sound weld metal within a defined range of conditions. It is qualified by welding a test piece that is then examined and tested; the results fix the range of approval the welder is allowed to work inside.

  • It is about the person, not the procedure. A WPQ qualifies the welder's skill. It is a separate record from the ones that qualify the procedure (the WPS and the WPQR/PQR behind it), which are about the recipe rather than the hand that follows it.
  • It has a defined scope. The test qualifies the welder for a band of processes, materials, positions, thicknesses and diameters — not for everything. Production work has to fall inside that band.
  • It has a shelf life. A qualification is not permanent. It stays valid only while the welder keeps using the process and the shop keeps confirming that on a schedule the code sets.
The Hard Part

Continuity: Why a Qualification Quietly Expires

The reason welder qualification is a software problem and not a filing problem is continuity — the code requirement that a qualification only stays alive if the welder keeps welding and the shop keeps confirming it. Under ISO 9606-1, the common European welder-qualification standard, the mechanics are specific:

  • Six-month confirmation. A responsible person at the employer must confirm, every six months, that the welder has been working within the qualified range. Miss that confirmation and the certificate becomes invalid — even if its longer validity period is still open.
  • Process-by-process. If a welder stops using a particular process for more than six months, the qualification for that process lapses on its own, independent of the others.
  • Periodic proof. A qualification is typically valid for two or three years, and to keep it alive the code expects ongoing evidence — for example, a full retest every three years, or two test coupons welded every two years (within the last six months of the validity period) and examined by radiographic, ultrasonic or destructive testing. Which route applies depends on the standard the shop works to and whether it holds an ISO 3834 quality system.

Multiply that across a floor of welders, each with several processes and a rolling six-month clock, and manual tracking becomes a game you eventually lose. A missed confirmation does not announce itself — it just sits there until the day a weld is made by a welder whose qualification silently expired, which is a nonconformity waiting for an auditor.

What the Software Does

From Spreadsheet to Live Record

Welder qualification management software takes that clock off your hands. In practice it does four things:

  • Holds every WPQ in one place — scope, validity dates and the supporting test evidence attached to each welder, instead of scattered certificates.
  • Surfaces the qualifying work automatically. Because production welds are already recorded, the system can show the welds behind a welder's continuity — the evidence that they have kept working in-range — rather than making someone reconstruct it by hand.
  • Watches the continuity clock and warns you before a qualification lapses, per welder and per process, so a confirmation or retest happens on time instead of after the fact.
  • Prevents out-of-range work. With qualifications and their scope on record, the system can flag when someone is about to work outside what they are qualified for — stopping the nonconformity before it is welded.

The payoff is straightforward: fewer audit findings, no production stopped by a lapsed certificate discovered too late, and no scramble to reconstruct evidence when a customer or notified body asks for it.

ISO vs ASME

The Same Idea, Named Two Ways

Welder qualification exists under both major code families, but they name and govern it differently — worth knowing if your shop works to more than one.

  • The standard. Under ISO, welder qualification is governed by ISO 9606 (with ISO 9606-1 covering steels). Under ASME, it lives in Section IX of the Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, which qualifies welders through the Welder Performance Qualification.
  • The acronym trap. "WPQ" reliably means the welder's qualification. But "WPQR" is ambiguous across codes: in ISO it usually means the procedure record (equivalent to an ASME PQR), while in ASME it can mean the welder's performance qualification record. Same letters, different record — a common source of confusion on multi-code jobs.
  • Continuity. The six-month confirmation model is an ISO 9606 concept, reinforced by an ISO 3834 quality system. ASME Section IX handles maintenance of qualification on its own terms — for example, a welder's qualification for a process lapses if the process is not used within a set period, with its own rules for renewal.
