On-Premise vs Cloud —
and the New On-Premise.

The on-premise vs cloud debate is stuck on an old picture of on-premise. A modern appliance keeps the data ownership and drops nearly every compromise that used to come with it.

The Short Answer

Cloud software is easy to reach but puts your records on someone else's infrastructure; classic on-premise gave you ownership but at the cost of IT burden, self-patching and awkward remote access. A modern on-premise appliance removes those old trade-offs — you keep the data ownership without inheriting the maintenance and access problems that used to come with running your own server. The real choice today is not "convenient cloud versus painful on-premise." It is three options, and the third one is new.

Option One

Cloud: Convenient, but Not Yours

Cloud welding software runs on a vendor's servers and you reach it through a browser. It is genuinely easy to start with — nothing to install, reachable from anywhere — and for some shops that is enough. The trade-offs are structural, not incidental:

  • Your records live on shared infrastructure. Weld data and IP sit on a third party's servers, reachable on the public internet by design — a real consideration for shops that treat their records as sensitive assets.
  • Access depends on the vendor. When the service is down, so are your records. When the subscription ends, access can end with it.
  • The bill scales with you. Per-seat or usage pricing, often behind a quote, tends to grow with your team and your data — and is hard to fix in advance.
  • It stops when the connection does. A browser tool on a public URL cannot capture work in a dead zone or through an internet outage.
Option Two

Classic On-Premise: Yours, but a Burden

Traditional on-premise software solved the ownership problem — your data on your hardware — but it earned on-premise its reputation for being heavy. This is the picture most people still have in their heads, and it is why "on-premise" can sound like a step backwards:

  • It became an IT project. Someone had to specify, install, configure and maintain a server — staff or budget most fabrication shops would rather not spend.
  • You patched it yourself. Updates, security fixes and monitoring fell on the shop, or on an external contractor billed by the hour.
  • Remote access was awkward. Reaching an in-building server from home or the field usually meant opening ports or standing up a VPN — friction, and exposure.
  • "On-premise edition" often meant less. Some vendors shipped a cut-down local build and kept the real product in the cloud.

Every one of these is a real reason shops drifted toward cloud. They are also exactly the problems a modern appliance is built to remove.

Option Three

The New On-Premise: Ownership Without the Compromises

A modern on-premise appliance keeps what made on-premise worth choosing — your data, physically in your building — and engineers away the burdens that made it painful. This is the generation Elenchon is built on:

  • The whole platform, not a local edition. Every capability runs on the appliance, with no minimum term and no exit fee. What you build stays yours, and you keep view-only access to your history even if you leave.

The result reframes the debate: you no longer trade ownership for convenience. You keep the data in your building and reach it from anywhere, without running a server or patching anything.
